What is Garage Door Hail Damage: Know the Signs

Garage door hail damage occurs when hailstones dent, ding, crack, or otherwise compromise your door’s structure. The severity depends on the hail’s size and speed, as well as the door’s material. Even small hail can leave noticeable dents, causing both cosmetic and functional issues.

Common Signs of Garage Door Hail Damage

The most common signs of garage door hail damage include dents and dings, cracked panels, chipped paint, and operational issues. While the damage may seem small, even minor issues can lead to bigger problems, including rust, structural degradation, and even misalignment of your door.

LEARN ABOUT US

We’re your #1 source for garage door repairs in Calgary, but don’t take our word for it! Here’s what just a few of our customers say:

I have used this company several times over the last 10 years to take care of my residential garage doors. Every time they have gone above and beyond. Dave was just here today, answered all my questions, got the job done quickly and explained what he did. Prices are fair and I never worry about getting gouged. Highly recommend for any overhead door needs.

Michelle Screpnechuk

Jessie was amazing and provided fast and professional service. He not only fixed our door, but noticed and corrected a few other things that would improve performance, and gave me some very helpful owner maintenance tips. Once again, I’ve received excellent service from overhead doors, and will continue to recommend and use them. Jessie in particular gave excellent service and deserves credit as a very valuable employee.

Brad Hagen

Quick and excellent service by jay. I needed a garage door repaired and OverheadDoor had a technician at my door in less than 30 mins. Reasonable rates for the work that was needed and I wouldn’t hesitate to contact them in the future.

Tom J

I had several questions to ask about overhead doors, but I hesitated a lot.
However,
Kabneet provided a truly kind and comfortable consultation, and the staff member in charge helped me understand the process much better. Furthermore, not only was I able to purchase the correct items from the shop they recommended, but I was also able to receive various pieces of advice.
I am grateful for your kindness and will visit again if I need anything in the future.

Common Questions

  • Dents and dings in panels
  • Cracks or punctures in weaker panels
  • Chipped or flaked paint, exposing bare metal
  • Misalignment or binding when opening/closing
  • Warping of thin aluminum or composite sections

Look for:

  • Visible indentations or divots
  • Cracked or split sections
  • Discoloured, peeling, or missing paint
  • Noise, stiffness, or jerky motion when operating
  • Gaps or misalignment between panels

If you notice any of these after a storm, call a technician for an inspection.

Yes. Even small hailstones can leave surface damage (dents, paint chips), especially on softer materials like aluminum. Over time, these minor flaws can lead to corrosion or operational problems.

The short answer is, it depends on the severity:

  • Minor dents: possibly manageable with paintless dent repair tools
  • Paint chips: You can touch up the paint, but color-match and adhesion are critical
  • Structural damage, cracking, or misalignment: best left to professionals

If you’re unsure if DIY is the best solution for you, you may want to call in the pros. An improper repair could worsen the damage or void warranties.

  • Dent repair / paintless dent removal for non-structural damage
  • Panel replacement for damaged sections only
  • Full door replacement when structural integrity is compromised
Minor repairs often take a few hours. Panel replacement or repainting may take a day or more, depending on parts and finishing. Full replacements may take multiple days (removal, installation, finishing).

That depends on your homeowner’s insurance policy. Many policies include “storm damage” or “hail damage” coverage.

To help your claim:

  • Document damage right after the storm (photos/videos)
  • Keep invoices and repair estimates
  • Get a professional assessment

We can provide quotes, repair reports, and help liaise with insurance adjusters.

As soon as you can. Leaving damage unchecked:

  • Allows rust or corrosion to develop
  • Can worsen structural issues
  • May affect the door’s safe operation

Prompt repair preserves functionality and curb appeal.

We’ll have your new garage door up and running in no time—so you can get on with your day, worry-free.
