Spring cleaning? 5 tips to organize your garage

24/7 Service & Support
Garage spring cleaning

The garage is one of the most utilized spaces in a home for extra storage, sporting gear, equipment, tools, and other knick-knacks. It’s also an area of the home that often gets neglected and cluttered until there’s barely any room to park the car, which is its main purpose. If the thought of cleaning out your garage door feels overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. With the warmer weather in Lethbridge, it’s the perfect time to get your garage organized and set up with a good system. Here are some simple spring cleaning tips for your garage to get you started.

1. Set yourself up for success

First thing’s first, you want to set yourself up for success for this project. Set aside a good chunk of time where you can focus on decluttering and organizing, get the cars out of the garage and off the driveway to give yourself some room, gather some empty boxes, wear comfortable clothing, and plan some breaks in-between. When you have everything in place, you’ll feel a little less overwhelmed and ready to get to work.

2. Tackle the thing that’s been on your mind the most

It could be your toolbox that’s become a mess or a corner of the garage that’s piling up with old toys and baby things. Whatever it is, tackle the thing that has been weighing heavily on your mind first. This will lift the task off your shoulders and give you some relief as you continue decluttering and organizing the rest of your garage.

3. Categorize items

Make different areas for sports equipment, outdoor/camping gear, home goods, yard tools and garden equipment, and miscellaneous items. From there, go through each pile and begin pulling items out that you want to get rid of. Organize the items into different boxes, one labelled “to donate” and another “to discard”.

4. Create a garage layout

Consider the items that you frequently use and what you need to access quickly. For example, the lawnmower should be placed closer to the door with gardening tools and equipment close by. We recommend storing items that you use less frequently on higher shelves and the ones that you use often on lower shelves for easy access. This brings us to our next point…

5. Set up shelving and wall mounts

A great way to utilize precious “real estate” is to maximize the amount of space you have in your garage. Wall mounts are great for shovels, ice picks, brooms, and rakes, freeing up floor space. Pegged wall mounts are ideal for sporting gear, like helmets and rackets. Be sure to install heavy-duty hooks that can hold ladders for safety. Shelves with baskets are a great way to categorize your items so they are organized and easy to find.

Bonus tip: Service your garage door

Last but certainly not least, spring is a great time to have your garage door serviced. The cold winter months can take a toll on the mechanisms and components of your garage door, which can be left undetected until a costly repair or replacement is needed. It would be a shame to have a beautifully organized and clean garage with a malfunctioning door! Call our Overhead Door location in Lethbridge and we’ll make sure your garage door is functioning as it should.
